Great Walking Weather Today

The weather here in Wisconsin is finally getting better and this afternoon was almost perfect walking weather.  It was sunny and about 60 so walking was very comfortable.  I set out to do about 5 miles and ended up doing almost 7 since I just felt like going farther.  If I had the time tonight I could have kept walking.  Most of the route was along fairly busy streets but even then there are things to see.  As I was walking down Howell Ave, a very busy mainstreet here, there is a section across the street from a couple of department stores where there is still a wooded area, and as I was walking by there today I saw three deer stopped in the brush less than 100 feet away.  I took a couple pictures with my phone but the quality really was bad.  I stopped to watch them for a minute or two but they were very still waiting for me to leave.  Will be off Wednesday and back to walking on Thursday again.  I am really glad the rain cleared out early in the day today so I could get my walk in today.

Words to Live By

I listen to a lot of Contemporary Christian Music and I just love the messages that can be found in so many of the lyrics.  Every now and then a song really hits me and I want to share it with others.  One song that I have shared with some friends recently is a song by Mark Schultz called "The Time that is Left."  I just love the words to this song and try to think about them every day as they remind me of what is really important.  I have included the words for you here:

What will you do with the time that's left Will you live it all with no regret? Will they say that you loved till your final breath? What will you do with the time that's left?

What will you do with the time that's past? Oh and all the pain that seems to last? Can you give it to Jesus and not look back? What will you do with the time that's past? What will He say when your time has come? When He takes you into His arms of love? With tears in His eyes will He say well done? What will He say when your time has come? Peace  Greg

Back to Training

Well I missed most of the last two weeks of training due to weather and health issues so it was good to be able to get out and walk again today.  I took my 8 year old for a 3.5 mile walk this afternoon and then the whole family walked to Culvers for desert today so that was another 2.5 miles for the day.  I plan to get back in the routine of doing 5 miles on Tuesday and Thursday morning and then doing 7-10 miles on Saturday and Sunday for the next month or so before I start doing longer distances in June and July.  Walking is actually getting pleasant again as the Wisconsin weather has finally started to warm up a bit.  I am still walking in my shoes from last year.  I have ordred a pair of keens but have not received them yet and I am waiting anxiously.

Sunday Training

Well today after Church I decided to go out and do one more training walk for the weekend.  It was another nice day so I decided to push it a bit more this time.  I ended up walking 7 miles today and felt fine afterwards.  Monday will be an off day and more training again on Tuesday.  I still need to get my new shoes so that I can break those in but for now the old ones are doing ok.  I had the start of a blister on Saturday but put a little moleskin on it today and it didn't bother me at all.

Saturday Night with the Family

This was a pretty good Saturday night.  Our family went to a Worldvision exhibit followed by a concert and they were both excellent.  The exhibit is a travelling exhibit called "World Vision Experience - Aids."  The exhibition is travelling around the country to raise awareness of the orphans created by the Aids pandemic in Africa.  If you have a chance to experience this I would recommend it.  It is a unique point of view that really gets you thinking.

After seeing the Worldvision exhibit, we then enjoyed a concert by Sara Groves.  Sara has a beatiful voice and the stories that she shares about her music and faith made the concert very enjoyable.  One of the things I enjoy about Christian artists is the role model the provide for kids.  Sara came out after the concert and signed the girls posters and talked to them for a couple minutes.  She is a very down to earth genuine person.

Beautiful April Day

Well the weather today finally feels like spring so it was a great day to get out and walk.  I had initally set out a course of about 4 miles but extended it because the weather was great and my legs felt good.  I ended up doing about 5.4 miles today and still felt good afterwards.  When I started out it was about 48 and by the time I finished it was about 53 so I am glad I wore shorts today so I did not get to warm.  I will probably go for another walk tomorrow and then skip Monday since Tuesdays work better for walking in the afternoon/evening.  I need to get out today to get fitted for those Keens since they look like they will be more comfortable to walk in and I want plenty of time to break them in.

More Training

More Training Originally uploaded by ocnetgeek
Well I had to get out and walk early this afternoon instead of waiting till this evening because of impending rain. I normally don't mind walking in the rain but I do when it is still only 37 degrees out. Damp and cold are not great combinations. Did a slightly different route today but still got in just over 3.5 miles. And per the request of one of my supporters, I have included a digital picture of my pedometer from todays walk. Sorry about the quality but my camera phone is not the greatest camera.

Training at Last

Well I couldn't wait any longer for the weather in Wisconsin to impvove before I started training.  It was 37 during my walk today so the temp was not ideal but it was not too bad.  I started off with a 3.5 mile walk tonight and felt pretty good by the end.  Here is a link to my route in case you are interested.  I will take tomorrow off and walk again on Thursday.  It felt a little strange to get all the stuff out again and get out there but I do find the walking to be very relaxing.

Who I Walk For

Since I have now started fundraising and training for this year's 3 Day in Chicago I thought I would start a post that lists all of the people that I am walking in support or in memory of.  If you have someone that you would like added to this list please send me an e-mail with their name.  Vi McGuigan - My Mother and a survivor.  She is the primary reason I started walking in the 3 Day last year and plan to continue walking. Suzie Mole(Albrecht) - A young lady from a family that lived down the street from mine growing up in Oak Creek.  One of the nicest friendliest people you could every meet.  She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer following the birth of her first child and died at the age of 27. Tery Wong - Another Survivor and a teammate I met during my first 3 Day in 2007.  Her enthusiasm for this cause and seemingly unending supply of energy helped make the 2007 3 Day an memorable experience.
